Chapter Seven

It was awkward. Emery didn’t say a word to him, and Griffin and he ate in a silence that might’ve been peaceful for any other happily mated couple.

Right now, it was just awkward. It was especially awkward with the way Emery kept examining the sandwiches before eating them, pulling them apart, as if to make sure that there would be nothing wrong with them, no tampering done, no pills hidden inside that would drug him or make him sick.

Griffin’s annoyance spilled over the rim of his patience when Emery did it a third time.

“Will you cut that out! I’m not going to drug you!”

Emery glared at him. “How am I supposed to know that?” he asked. “You only kidnapped me and forced me to mate with you!”

Griffin looked at the bite mark on Emery’s neck. He’d put it there sometime during one of their many bouts of sex, but Griffin could hardly recall doing it. That was how out of control he’d been at the time.

Still, he wasn’t about to put up with this shit. “Don’t give me that. You fucking begged me to bite you.”

“Only because you teased and tortured me into saying it,” Emery muttered.

“Uh-huh, and I suppose you’ll say that I raped you next, right? Even though I made you beg for it before I did anything.”

“Shut up,” Emery said, looking away.

At least they were talking.

Might as well get the rest out of the way. “While you’re paying attention, I’m going to set down the ground rules.”

Emery snorted.

Griffin ignored it.

“My alpha is being generous with you. You were unconscious when I had to stand in front of him last night, but he’s not going to kill you, and he’s not going to try and hurt you.”

“Oh, and I suppose I should be grateful for that?”

“Considering what you tried to pull with those other cocksuckers who broke in here, yeah, you should be really damned grateful,” Griffin snapped.

Emery winced, but it was barely there before he frowned again, as though he’d been challenged. “Like a bunch of werewolves don’t deserve to be knocked down a peg or two.”

Well, this was new information that Max would be interested in. The confirmation that the humans who kept picking fights thought they were werewolves would be almost a relief, considering how much worse things would be if it got out they were wolfhounds.

“No one will hurt you, but just so you know, if you so much as look at any of the omegas the wrong way, especially Joey or Teddy, I’ll have a fight on my hands trying to keep their mates from killing you.”

Dean wasn’t officially mated to Joey, but everyone basically knew that something was going on there. That seemed a little too personal to say to Emery at the moment, however, so Griffin opted to keep his mouth shut.

Emery’s mouth turned into a hard line. “Why are you even bothering?”

Griffin didn’t get it. “What?”

“Why do anything to keep me alive if I’m the monster here? You all
